Disaster Response
The West Virginia Council of Churches has a long history of assisting in response to disasters and various human and community crises. The Council addresses the spiritual and material needs of those in crisis, such as citizens of West Virginia currently recovering from devastating floods.
The Council was the initial convening agency and continues as an active member and fiscal agent of "Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster" (VOAD).

Prayer for Montcoal Miners
Almighty and Gracious God, we come to you in this hour of need. We lift to you the miners and their families and friends caught in the midst of this disaster. Catch them up into your loving arms. Lift them into your care. Comfort them in this time of grief. We pray for the miners still trapped in darkness, knowing the darkness is not dark to you. Bring them into the light of your love and into the light of the world. May they know that you are near them, that our prayers are with them, even in the depths of the earth. We pray for those responding to this disaster: bear them up when they become weary; give them faith when perplexed; and bless them in their efforts. In the name of the one who is the Savior of the World, Jesus Christ. Amen.

Prayers for the People and Families of Haiti

Prayers in Behalf of the People of Haiti and the Recovery Workers are invited.  For consideration for your e-mail  prayer to be included, contact dsparks@wvcc.org.

Maker of heaven and earth, the earth has wrecklessly shaken the foundations and shattered an already fragile people. We pray that your love be poured down upon them. In the midst of the darkness surround them with a light beam of hope. From the confusion and chaos establish once again the work of your compassionate hand. Let this time be a time to bring the people of Haiti together in a harmony for good.  May this time be a wakeup call unto the world that poverty must come to a halt.  May we link our hearts, spirit and support to the people of Haiti.  Jesus is our Hope, the Reverend Dennis Sparks

Psalm 139

7Where can I go from your spirit? Or where can I flee from your presence? 8If I ascend to heaven, you are there; if I make my bed in Sheol, you are there. 9If I take the wings of the morning and settle at the farthest limits of the sea, 10even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me fast. 11If I say, “Surely the darkness shall cover me, and the light around me become night,” 12even the darkness is not dark to you; the night is as bright as the day, for darkness is as light to you.
